well... this is Kowrats story:
When Kowrat was about 1 1/2 years old, Liz and
i noticed that kowrat had a little lump on his right foot. not knowing what it was, we ignored it at first. as the lump got
bigger, we realized that it was not going away any time soon. Kowrat was brought
to the vet and put on a round of Novo-Trimel. But the ulcer on his right foot was getting worse. Kowrat would not take his
meds, even if we gave it to him in jam or other treats. So Kowrat didnt take his meds for about 2 weeks, thats when it got
really bad. the ulcer started to pus and bleed a bit. To help with the bumblefoot situation, i padded the cage with towels
and bathroom mats and several layers of thick fabric. I also kept the cage extreamly clean. The padding needs to be washed
every 1-2 days. every night, i clean out kowrats foot with some polysporin and give him his Novo-Trimle (he is supposed
to take the meds twice a day, but sometimes once a day is the best that i can get from him ). the padding in the cage
has helped alot! the ulcer has started shrinking and the wound is about a week away
from closing compleatly. Kowrat does have another ulcer on his left foot, but it is so small that it is almost gone. James
had pressure sores on his feet, but since the padding, they have gone away compleatly! i am really happy at the way this
has all turned out and i have learned quite a bit about treating bumblefoot. i am also going to stress that you pad your cages! padding has helped me alot and take it from me, you do not want your rats to get bumblefoot.
