'DON'T FEED' List

Here is a list of foods we rats CAN'T have...

Forbidden foods

~Blue cheese - mold toxic
~Licorice - suspected neurological poisoning
~raw dry beans or peanuts - contains antinutrients that destroy
vit A and enzymes needed to digest protein and
starches. Also causes red blood cells to clump
~Raw sweet potato - contains compounds that form cyanide in
the stomach
~Raw red cabagge and brussel sprouts - contains aninutrient
that destroys thiamin
~green bananas - inhibits starch-digesting enzymes
~Green potato skin and eyes - contains solanine, a toxin,
~wild insects - can carry internal parasites and diseases
~rubarb - contains high levels of oxalates
~raw bulk tofu - can contain bacteria; raw packaged tofu is safe
~orange juice - forbidden for male rats only, d-limonene in the
skin oil which gets into orange juice during squeezing can
cause kidney damage and kidney cancer due to a protein
that only male rats have in their kidneys. Pieces of
orange fruit are okay if you wash the orange skil oil off
after peeling it

~beans and sweet potatoes must be cooked

Foods to feed with caution

~carbonated beverages - rats can't burp, but they can fart!
~Chocolate - contains stimulants that can cause heart failure or
neurological poisoning
~beets, celer, eggplant, lettuce, cucumber, radish, spinach,
collards, tunip greens and corn - limit because they are
high in nitrates
~beets, almonds and swiss chard - limit because they are high
in oxalates

Beware of mold with rats, it is not just safe for them to cut of
the moldy parts. If something has started to go moldy at all, on the side of caution and don't feed it to them at all

~Beware of pesticides on produce. Make sure you wash well

~do not give rats water that is chlorinated or fluorinated. Hot
water from the tap contains more lead

Sick rats need food that is low in volume and rich in calories:
~moist cat food
~human baby food
~cooked egg yolk
~live full fat yogurt
~banana
~avocado
~soya based human baby milk (can be used to make powdered
baby food, porrige)
~nutrical (soft dietary supplement)
